Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-shinned?

Recommended Posts

My first contribution to this very cool site, so I apologize for anything wrong.

I've struggling on determining whether this is a Cooper's Hawk or a Sharp-shinned Hawk, I know there are determining features lacking from this angle. I was leaning towards Coopers.

It was taken in Central Massachusetts, December 16th at around 5pm. It is only slightly larger than Mourning Dove.

Welcome to Whatbird!!

With the "bug eyes" and dark nape, looks like you have a Sharp-shinned Hawk. I'd wait for more opinions, though. These can be tricky!

I agree, this is a Sharp-shinned Hawk (small, rounded head, cute, bug-eyed appearance, body that tapers toward the legs/tail, and nape that is the same color as the crown).
