Brewer's Blackbird?

Recommended Posts

This bird is from yesterday in Virginia Beach, VA.  It's in the same place that some Brewer's wintered last year and were located again two days ago by a very reputable birder.  While the photo is about as awful as it gets, it does show us that bright eye and the bill shape.  IMO, the small bill rules out the Common Grackle but would like confirmation from others before counting this bird (seen them before in San Francisco but this would be my first for the state).

Thank you for any and all help.

It's not a grackle. I'm not sure we can rule out Rusty Blackbird from this shot, though, and they'd be more expected there.

I think the word you're looking for is corrosion.

I definitely agree that Rusties are more common here, however, I feel that I eliminated them with good views with binoculars--I should've included that in the original post.

For what its worth, I see a lot of Brewer's here, and that drop winged posture is pretty much their trademark. Not sure if Rusty has the same posture or not.

I think its bill its too long, narrow and pointy to be a Brewer's though with this angle I could easily be mistaken.

If it was spring I would think it was a male Rusty.

Would a Rusty's plumage be this...not-rusty this early? I'm not familiar enough with them to know. I would say that's definitely not a grackle bill, though, so it's one of those two blackbirds.

Here's a Brewer's headshot for comparison, a Rusty's bill would be thinner but from the reference photos I'm looking at sometimes it's subtle enough it's hard to tell the difference.
