Downy or hairy?

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Whatbird! This looks like a Downy. The bill isn't very long, and there's no black spur extending forwards at the shoulder.

Agree with Downy, for the reasons psweet stated, and also the size compared to the suet cage. Hairy are bigger, about the same size as Red-bellied Woodpeckers.

Edit-Welcome to Whatbird! I'm also a mama of four that's a bird nerd. :)

Thank you! I suspected it was a Downy, but I have a very adamant seven year old who was sure it was a Hairy. We'll keep hoping to see one! Its good to know that they are as big as a red bellied - we have two of those and think they're HUGE. If I can get a good picture, I'm going to ask about House vs. Purple finches soon...that also has us debating :)

@mamabirdnerd10, that 'little guy' is a female.  With both Downy and Hairy, the males have red splotch on the back of their heads.  The females are just black and white.

It will be easier for us to answer your eventual House vs. Purple question if you'll include your location.  If you want to, click your name in the upper right and edit your profile.

Welcome to you and your nestlings.

with regard to the house vs purple finch - i was going  back and forth and having  a hard time deciding - but the females are much easier to tell apart in my opinion.. The female has strong facial markings where the female house finch is more uniformly tan
