gray/brown flycatcher?

Recommended Posts

Phoenix, Az - Jan 21, 2017

This gray phoebe looking bird has a brown crown; and light patch on shoulder ...  and a very alert posture.

Was flitting from the shore of a pond to a low hanging pine tree branch and back again.

I thought I'd throw in my two cents and say that the brown might either be the lighting or feathers which have lost their coloring. I get a similar phenomenon with Black-billed Magpies. That might just be on iridescent feathers though so if anyone who is more knowledgeable wants to pitch in, feel free

(Agreed with Black Phoebe)

Depending on the mix of melanins, black feathers can fade to brown.

Another big clue for Black Phoebe; they can usually be seen hunting from a low perch near a water source. I've seen them on rocks in streams.
