Looks like a Saw-whet to me.  I don't think it's a Boreal if that's that you were wondering.

Agree with Saw-whet. My Stokes says Boreal have white spots on the dark forehead, vs the streaks a saw-whet has, and black lines coming up from the eyes to the forehead. The Boreal also has a light colored beak, while the saw-whet beak is dark.

N. Saw-whet.  You are really lucky to have seen one of these.  I have never heard one even, and yet everyone else in the county has it seems like!  :(

I had gone out looking for a Boreal, so that was my thought when I saw a small owl, but the beak color and everything else pretty much convinced me of Saw-whet once I looked at the pictures.  I was just hoping you would all prove me wrong.  Oh well, it was a nice bird either way.

Thanks for your help!

Agree on Saw-whet. See my avatar for a comparison to a Boreal. If you have seen a SW Owl before Boreals appear much larger and bulkier.
