Non-breeding range

Recommended Posts

Hi, All--

Could someone help me understand the term "Non-breeding" range and when birds would be expected to be seen in these areas.  What constitutes such a designation?   Why is it different from Winter or Migration range?  It seems the term could encompass either of these categories.  Thanks in advance.

Where exactly are you seeing that terminology? It does seem a bit ambiguous. I've always known breeding/summer, winter, migration, year round, and rare/vagrant.

Some  Southern Hemisphere birds breed in the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer - our autumn and winter.  Among them, some migrate north during their autumn and winter - our spring and summer.  So "breeding" and non-breeding" range on a map is more meaningful. If the map were to just show where they are in the summer and where they are in the winter, that might lead to ambiguity and confusion.
